The Manager Who Says Yes and Then Pretends Like That Was Never the CaseYou were given the green light to move forward on an initiative. But once again, your boss has not only changed her mind, but it appears shes forgotten all about ever having approved the project. Now if this is a shift in direction based on some new critical information, thats totally legit. But if this behavior is dj vu more times than you can count, youve got a problem.How to DealThe way to ap proach this challenge is to identify whats causing the stop and go Who seems to always be whispering in her ear? Once you get a sense for who else may be involved in helping to change her mind, include those voices in meetings and get their sign-offs before you begin any project. And once you do- wait. Build into your project timeline a few days to let the dust settle and then circle back with your boss to confirm plans. You may not stop the behavior, but you will feel more in control and not spend so much time working on projects that may never see the light of day. 2. The Manager Who Doesnt Let You Work With Others (Ever)Your organization has a lot of departments and different perspectives. You think the project youre working on would benefit from cross-functional gruppework. Your boss doesnt. He might tell you that its better to involve others at the 11th hour. He might say that everyone is busy with other priorities. All of that may be true to some extent. But if his lack of sup port for collaboration is creating silos, something has to change.How to DealTake the conversations offline and out of the office. Make a point to visit other departments regularly. During lunch or after work, share whatever exciting projects you and your team are working on that may impact the entire company. Transparency and truth are keys to success and to being a real leader (whether you have the title or not). 3. The Manager Who Doesnt Just Disagree With Your Ideas, They Take it Out on YouYou pitch an idea or share your perspective with your boss and she disagrees. After that, youre not included in meetings. When you do get a seat at the table, youre ignored. Its a real possibility your boss is, indeed, retaliating against you. Its also possible that its just your imagination. Sadly, many times its the former scenario.How to DealAlthough this kind of behavior is illegal, bad bosses know how to subtly intimidate with the end goal of making you so uncomfortable that youll resign. And maybe you should. Its one way of dealing with the unfortunate situation. Another way is to schedule a meeting with your manager and share your view of what you think is happening and ask for her perspective. Back at your desk, type out a short email referencing the meeting, what was discussed, and letting her know that you understand the priorities she set forth (list them) and that youre really glad the air has been cleared. Of course, theres no guarantee shell stop, but it does give you a record of sorts and puts her on alert- so that if or when it happens again, you can confidently reach out to HR for guidance. 4. The Manager Who Likes to Play the Blame GameYou and your team launched a new campaign. Unfortunately, the results werent as good as youd hoped. You report your numbers to your boss and share lessons learned, but its not good enough. Your boss wants to know whos to blame. How to DealCome to the table with a reminder of what was agreed upon and what the hopes were fo r the project. Share a debrief of how prior projects succeeded. Then, transition to the current project, sharing the pros and cons and always emphasizing the positives (and not pointing fingers). By focusing on the team effort versus one specific mistake made by one specific person, you make it harder for your manager to single members out.5. The Manager Who Takes Full Credit for Work They Didnt DoYouve been working day and night to move mountains. The day comes when youve succeeded, and its time for everyone to know. But when the press release goes out, youre not mentioned. While it isnt unusual for a department head to pat herself on the back for overseeing your success, its a sign of a bad leader to dismiss those who really did the lions share of the job.How to DealIf public announcements dont recognize the right individuals or acknowledge a team effort, the way to approach your boss depends on them. If you think it was a very purposeful decision, this is one time you have to let it go. If people on your own team should have been applauded and werent, then do it yourself. Even if its just in an internal email to them or throwing an appreciation lunch, you have the opportunity to do what your boss doesnt Be a leader. But if you feel comfortable, send a quick email to your boss letting them know your team put a lot of work into the initiative and were a little disappointed not to see their names recognized publicly. Maybe shell apologize, maybe she wont- but your team will be stronger because you advocated for them.Anybody can be a boss- it doesnt immediately equate to being a leader. Keeping an eye out for these warning signs will help you understand the kind of person you report to- and whether its worth leaving them.

If you quit due to conflict or otherwise parted ways on bad terms with your former employer, it may not be that easy to return for an encore performance. Even if you left on a high note, there may be challenges to stepping back in where you left off or getting a foot in the door for a higher role.To navigate this potentially awkward situation, here are four tips to help you think through your options and improve your chances of success when approaching your old organization1. Have a good reason to return.Whether you left as a beloved star employee or burned bridg es on your way out the door, your former employer will want to know why youre asking to come back now. Even if you had a valid explanation for your departure, the fact is that you did leave to take another opportunity, whether professional or personal. Be prepared to explain your rationale for reapplying, and share with the hiring manager what skills and experiences youve gained in the interim that make you an even more desirable candidate today.2. Leverage positive connections.No matter where you used to work, chances are that you remember some colleagues fondly while others not so much- and vice versa. This means you need to use good judgment about which of your old contacts you reach out to when trying to network back into the company. Ideally, youve kept in touch with a handful of your favorites, so asking for updates about the company or position wont come out of left field. Since not all relationships are equal and some may even hurt more than help you, be careful who you ask for help. Focus on reconnecting with your strongest allies with whom you have the most positive associations.3. Polish up your resume.You might feel that your resume is less important when presenting it to your former employer, since they have already seen what you can do. It is used when citizens oppose a public works project or private development primarily because it will be built near where they live. These citizens often see the need for the project or development but oppose it because of the negative impact on them. A NIMBY attitude can be incredibly frustrating for local officials. Public works projects are necessary expenditures for local government, and they are needed to improve the quality of life in a community. Highway expansions, prisons, power plants, sewage treatment plants, and landfills are public works projects that frequently draw NIMBY opposition. Private developments - which local governments have some regulatory authority over - are a fact of life in a growing community. Economic development directors spend their working hours attracting businesses to their communities, but their efforts can be thwarted by well-o rganized and vocal NIMBY types. Elected officials like city council members pay attention to well-organized and vocal groups, so public administrators must be ready to respond to issues raised. New neighborhoods, low-income housing developments, shopping centers, stadiums, and amusement parks tend to garner NIMBY detractors. The Contrasting Opinions of Citizens Regarding New Projects and Developments Unfortunately, the positive and negative impacts of public works projects and private developments fall unevenly across citizens. Almost everyone can get behind building a new prison when current ones are overcrowded to the point of human rights concerns, but no one wants to live next to a prison. Ninety-nine percent of the voters may be for construction, but the people who own property adjacent to the proposed site are vehemently opposed. Similarly, most people like the idea of a new shopping mall in town. However, few would want the parking lot on the other side of their back fen ce. The Concerns of NIMBY Proponents NIMBY folks often give the impression they are against progress. While their propensity to use picket signs and chants comes off a little silly, the concerns they raise are important ones. They cite problems like traffic congestion, pollution, loud noise, increasing crime, decreasing real property value, harm to local business and loss of local character. Those who do not live near the proposed project or development may write off many of these concerns as implementation issues, but then again, those dismissing the concerns do not have to live next to the site. Mitigating the concerns rarely means problems will be avoided completely. Examples of NIMBY at Work Here are a few examples showing how NIMBY sentiments can impact real life. In 2010 in Austin, Texas, Wal-Mart proposed to renovate the site of the closed Northcross Mall to open a store there. In a town known for hippies, liberals and development opponents, this part of town had a r elatively high concentration of all these individuals. A group of neighborhood residents organized to fight the renovation. Some people opposed Wal-Mart because of its employment practices, so their issues with the development were on a larger scale than NIMBY concerns. Others opposed the development because of the potential impact on local business, traffic flow, and crime. In the end, Wal-Mart renovated the site, but the store was built smaller than originally proposed. The group Responsible Growth for Northcross fought the development for more than four years with their chief arguments as NIMBY issues. In recent years in Western Europe, the placement of wind farms has been a hot issue with NIMBY implications. The countryside is the ideal place to build wind farms since there are few large structures to block the wind. The problem comes when an actual site is proposed. People are happy to reduce their nations dependency on fossil fuels when it makes economic sense, but many rural residents do not want windmills added to the views from their bedroom windows. The NIMBY argument is the windmills mar the picturesque landscape.
